Subaru Outback or Crosstrek - Which is Right For You in Countryside, IL
How Do the New Subaru Crosstrek and Outback Models Compare to Each Other?
At The Autobarn Subaru of Countryside, we want to help drivers around Chicago find the right vehicle for the right price, and with our terrific selection of new Subaru models for sale, we're sure that we have the right vehicle for everyone. Two of our most popular Subaru SUVs are the Subaru Crosstrek and the Subaru Outback. The two vehicles share many similarities, but it's what's different about them that makes one vehicle a better fit for some drivers than others. That's why we're going to compare the two vehicles to each other, helping you choose the model that's right for you.
Subaru Outback vs. Subaru Crosstrek

Engine Options
Both the Subaru Crosstrek and the Subaru Outback models use Boxer engines that have horizontally opposed pistons instead of vertical pistons like most other vehicles. This allows the engine to be placed lower in the engine bay, helping increase stability and center of gravity.
The Crosstrek lineup uses a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 152-horsepower while the Subaru Outback lineup has a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182-horsepower. The same engine is available on the Sport, Limited, and Wilderness Crosstrek models. The Outback lineup has a sportier available 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 260-horsepower and 277 pounds-feet of torque, providing you with a stronger performance to enjoy when you're traveling around Countryside, IL.
Towing Capacities
The new Subaru Crosstrek and Outback models achieve impressive towing capacities when properly equipped. The Crosstrek has less standard towing capacity than the Outback does, with 1,500 pounds of towing standard on the Crosstrek and 2,700 pounds standard on the Outback. Both vehicles can tow up to 3,500 pounds though, with the Crosstrek Wilderness model achieving it and multiple Outback models offering it.

Size
The Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact crossover SUV, while the Subaru Outback models have a unique midsize SUV/wagon design. That's why the new Outback models have more space for passengers and cargo than the Crosstrek does. The Crosstrek still impresses with its size and versatility, offering 100.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats. The Subaru Outback models have 109 cubic feet of passenger volume for your passengers to stretch out and enjoy the ride around Oak Lawn. The Outback also has 32.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.
If you need the most space for larger items, you can fold down the rear seats in the Crosstrek and enjoy 55.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. In the Outback, folding down the rear seats rewards you with up to 75.6 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.
Price
Because the Subaru Crosstrek is a smaller model and in a different class than the Subaru Outback is, it's more affordable. The Crosstrek starts at just under $25,000 while the new Subaru Outback models start at under $29,000. With the price range, you can upgrade to a nicer new Crosstrek model for a similar price as the Base Outback model.
